In the wake of the #MeToo movement, many firms are rightly examining their gender diversity. However, across the advertising industry, it’s also raising the concern of ‘tokenism’ hires. The backlash against sexual harassment at work has shone a light on workplace equality, prompting senior bosses to get more women onto Boards. Yet, many are being confronted with the fact that there aren’t enough senior female candidates. One CEO of a top advertising firm, who spoke to Digiday on a condition of anonymity, said that whilst he believes female leadership would improve his all-male management team, he doesn’t want the candidate to be a token hire – and argues that he shouldn’t be vilified for that decision.
