The route to building a sustainable pipeline of talent for the future lies within those groups that are currently untapped. There's a great opportunity to explore them and in turn improve social mobility and strengthen our economy.
The UK is enjoying the highest levels of employment on record and there is a skills shortage across many key sectors. Despite this we have pockets of the UK population where there are untapped sources of talent. The latest ONS statistics show that there are currently more than 800,000 young people in the UK not in education, employment or training. Figures show that this demographic are more than twice as likely to be unemployed than the population as a whole. This combined with many other groups who are underrepresented in the workforce represents a huge amount of untapped resource, which would not only improve our society’s social mobility but also strengthen our economy.
