There are so many ways you can finish the following sentences:
- Why do cats....
- Why do dogs....
- Why do cats and dogs
My favourite data visualiser, Nadieh Bremer, has partnered up with Google Trends to look at the most popular search terms around Cats and Dogs and create this amazing visualisation of the most vital questions in today's world... why do dogs lick me, and why do cats like boxes.
Sure, this has very little to do with recruiting candidates, or at least on the surface it does.
By analyzing the trends of how candidates are searching places like Google, Indeed, LinkedIn, or any other places you might be wanting to them to find you online, we can begin to understand the candidate's approach to a job search and use this data to influence the way we name our pages, structure our website, or write our job ads.
At TMP we have implemented an enterprise level search engine for some of our clients and monitor this exact kind of thing. We report on the types of terms that candidates are using with their search, and which jobs they're likely to click on when using those terms.
If we find that certain search terms are not generating any clicks, or not returning the types of roles the candidate would be expecting, then we work on the job copy and improve the machine learning algorithm to ensure the next time someone types the same thing they'll get the result they're after.
This is one of my favourite parts to my job and I encourage you in 2019 to start paying more attention to what Cats and Dogs are doing. This will help ensure that your candidates will always find what they're looking for, and more importantly, you will find the type of candidate that you're looking for.
You know, cats and dogs can be utterly strange sometimes. Actually, more often than sometimes. Ever since getting a cat 14 years ago, I've come to realize how truly enigmatic animals can be. Why does my cat go crazy for my sweaty gym clothes? Why does she suddenly stop, in the middle of a playful frenzy, to lick her leg for a second? WHY the obsession with cardboard boxes?!
